Testing the Color Waves yarn
To test it out, I made some can holders and a small blanket. The can holders are from a pattern by Moogly (Ravelry, direct). The second (brown) one is my own spin on the pattern. I may eventually post the pattern I wrote for that one.
The blanket is simply a corner to corner blanket with two rows of each color repeated until I was almost out of yarn. Then I did a border of single crochet around in one color and then the second color over the top. I may eventually post this pattern, too. The size of the blanket was mostly dictated by how much yarn I had left over after my can holders were done.
My Experience
Now on to the actual experience with the yarn. I’m not sure I believe the 3 category rating. This yarn felt more like a 4/worsted yarn to me. I could blame it on my lack of experience with a wide range of yarn, but I’m not sure that’s why. I’m doing a lot of work with Red Heart Super Saver because of my temperature projects. The Color Waves yarn seems even thicker than the Super Saver. It is consistent in size, which is nice.
The yarn is the slightest bit scratchy. I haven’t washed it yet, so I’m not sure if washing might soften it up. It isn’t scratchy enough to bother our baby, but none of our family is super sensitive to scratchy textures. I like that it’s machine-washable.
When worked in a dense pattern it makes thick material. My little blanket feels pretty warm. It seems to stretch some. The can holders I made stretched out an inch or so when I started hanging things in them.
My favorite part of the yarn was the colors. I really liked the Prairie Sunset colorway. It was hard for me to settle on that one since I had to pick just one (Buddy picked out the brown).
