Simple Single Crochet Baby Blanket

Daffodils are a sure sign of spring!
Daffodils are a sure sign of spring!

Spring is coming to Indiana and spring means babies, right? Baby blankets make excellent baby shower gifts. As a mother of four, I can tell you one can never have too many blankets. Not only can they be used to keep kids warm, they can also be used as a play mat, especially on hard floors or scratchy grass. The pattern that follows makes a blanket that fits those uses very well.

Edging (if you want one, I didn’t)

  1. Join the same or another color in one corner, ch 1, sc around entire blanket in each st or end of row, sl st into beginning chain

I ended up with a 23.5″ wide by 34″ long blanket with 101 rows.

Wrap up

It’s a very basic blanket, but a nice and useful blanket.

A word on yarn substitutions: if you substitute yarn, make sure the total yardage of your new yarn matches the amount I used if you want it to come out right. If you use a thinner yarn the blanket will come out smaller and you should use a smaller hook. If the yarn is thicker, your blanket will be bigger and you’ll need to use a bigger hook.

My two cents as a mom: make sure the yarn is machine washable! With kids, messes happen and the easier it is to clean up the mess the better.
